Mesh coils reached diminishing returns; wicking is the new battleground

The move from wire to mesh delivered a real, visible improvement. The next round of gains is coming from the least glamorous component in the device.

The transition from round wire to mesh was the last genuinely legible hardware improvement in this category. A flat mesh strip presents more surface area at a more even temperature than a coiled wire does, and the practical consequences — faster ramp, more consistent output, fewer hot spots — were noticeable without instrumentation.

That transition is essentially complete across mainstream pod hardware, and the returns from refining mesh geometry appear to be flattening. Manufacturer documentation still lists mesh variations as headline features; the differences between them are increasingly hard to characterise as anything other than marginal.

Where the constraint moved

To the wick. Which is, in most pods, cotton.

The limiting factor in a small device is not usually how evenly the metal heats. It is whether liquid arrives at that metal fast enough to keep up, consistently, across a range of viscosities and for the life of the pod. Get that wrong and every downstream symptom follows: dry hits under sustained use, flooding and gurgling when the balance goes the other way, leaking at the airflow path, and premature flavour decline.

Wicking is a materials and geometry problem — aperture size, channel path, packing density, and how the material behaves as it accumulates residue. None of it photographs well, which is presumably why it does not appear on packaging.

What documentation does and does not tell you

Manufacturer specifications typically state coil resistance and a recommended wattage range. Those are useful. They say very little about wicking behaviour, which is generally not specified at all.

The observable proxies, none of which are measurements:

  • Behaviour under sustained use — whether consecutive draws hold up or the fourth is noticeably drier than the first.
  • Viscosity tolerance — whether the pod copes with high-VG liquid or was clearly tuned for thinner formulations.
  • Failure mode over a pod’s life — gradual flavour decline is a wicking-and-residue story; sudden onset is usually something else.

The honest limitation

We describe these behaviours as observed rather than measured, because we do not run instrumented bench testing and are not going to imply otherwise. What can be said with confidence is structural: the industry has largely exhausted the easy gains from heating-element geometry, and the component that now determines whether a pod is good is the one nobody markets.
