USB-C is standard now, but charging behaviour still varies wildly

The connector converged. What happens behind it did not — and charge rate, cutoff behaviour and passthrough differ more between devices than the shared port suggests.

USB-C is now close to universal on pod hardware, and micro-USB has largely disappeared from new releases. That convergence is welcome and, for once, uncomplicated: one cable, reversible, mechanically more robust than what it replaced.

What has not converged is the circuitry behind the port. The connector is a standard; the charging implementation is not.

Where devices differ

Charge rate. Stated charging currents vary considerably across devices of similar cell capacity. Manufacturer documentation usually states a figure; where it does not, the time-to-full claim is the only guide and it is not equivalent.

Cutoff and top-off behaviour. How a device terminates charge, and whether it re-initiates when left connected, is almost never documented. Devices left plugged in overnight are common; what the circuit does during those hours is not something the packaging addresses.

Passthrough. Whether a device can be used while charging, and whether doing so routes power around the cell or through it, differs between devices that look identical. This is worth knowing and is rarely stated plainly.

Protection features. Over-discharge, over-current, short-circuit and thermal protections are frequently listed as bullet points without specification. A bullet point is not a specification.

The practical guidance

It is short, and it applies regardless of device.

Use the cable and a charger of appropriate rating rather than the highest-output brick in the house. Do not charge unattended overnight where you can avoid it. Do not continue using a device whose port is loose, whose case is deformed, or which becomes hot in normal charging — all three are reasons to stop rather than to monitor.

For any device using external removable cells, the standard advice applies with more force: damaged wraps are a genuine hazard, loose cells should never be carried in a pocket with keys or coins, and cells should be replaced rather than repaired.

Why the variation persists

Because the port is visible and the circuit is not. Convergence happened on the part buyers can see and compare. There is no competitive pressure on the part they cannot, and no labelling convention that would create any.
