How to fix a burnt vape: what the coil makers' own FAQs say

A burnt coil is replaced, not repaired. Vaporesso's and Geekvape's own FAQs on burnt taste, priming waits and wattage, by disposable, pod and coil.

By Staff, Pod & Coil

To fix a burnt vape, first decide whether the coil is burnt or only the liquid around it. A burnt coil is replaced, not repaired: Vaporesso and Geekvape both say to fit a new pod or coil, prime it and wait before the first puff. A disposable has no coil to swap, so it goes.

This is an evergreen how-to, not news. It rests on manufacturer pages this desk read on 16 October 2026: Vaporesso’s support FAQ, Geekvape’s FAQ, Geekvape’s Z Series Coil page and its N Cartridge FAQ. Beside them sit two retailer guides that rank for this query, Riot E-Liquid’s and Ten Motives’, read the same day.

Vaporesso’s answer to “What should I do if it tastes burnt?” is one line: replace the pod or coil, and “it is not recommended to continue to use it”. Geekvape is barely softer. A coil that is only slightly burnt, its FAQ says, “you should probably still change it”, and it gives its reason in its own words: “burnt coils can produce harmful chemicals”. That is the maker’s statement, quoted as written; this desk adds nothing to it.

On a fixed-coil pod the coil and the reservoir are one part, so the fix is a new pod. Geekvape’s N Cartridge is a 2 mL refillable pod with an integrated coil in 0.6 ohm and 1.2 ohm, and its FAQ says to replace the pod on a burnt taste because that is a sign “the integrated coil has reached the end of its life”.

Retailer guides rank well for this query. Here is what they advise, next to what the maker pages say.

The wait times are not one number. Vaporesso says prime and wait “about 5 minutes”. Geekvape’s FAQ has a primed sub-ohm tank stand for 5-10 minutes. Its Z coil page says 3-5 minutes after filling, and the N Cartridge FAQ says two to three minutes for that pod. Each figure belongs to its own hardware; averaging them would produce a number no maker printed. Neither of the two retailer pages, in the text read, quotes a manufacturer’s figure.

The Z coil page also offers a quicker prime: after filling, with the device off, take a few gentle puffs with the airflow reduced. It warns in the same breath not to rush, because a coil fired before the cotton is saturated can burn. It puts a Z XM coil’s typical life at 50-60 mL of e-liquid, varying with VG/PG ratio and habits. Our coil longevity review covers why some coils are built to last a fortnight and no more.

Why does my vape taste burnt?

Vaporesso lists four causes, and they are worth reading as an engineer would, as failure modes of the wick:

  • End of life. The pod or coil has reached its maximum lifespan.
  • Dry burning. The liquid ran out and the device was fired anyway.
  • Thick liquid. Thicker, higher-VG e-liquid can burn the coil; Vaporesso’s fix is a thinner liquid.
  • No priming. Firing a new coil before priming it and waiting about five minutes.

Geekvape’s list of six ways to stop a coil burning overlaps and adds two liquid causes: prime your coils, stop chain vaping, reduce power, keep the tank topped up, use an e-liquid with more PG, and try one with less sweetener. The N Cartridge FAQ names high wattage, chain vaping and insufficient e-liquid. The Z coil page explains the VG point mechanically: high-VG liquid is thicker, wicks slower and may build up on the coil faster.

Pod and liquid have to suit each other. Geekvape matches the 1.2 ohm N pod to nic salts or high-PG 50/50 liquids, and the 0.6 ohm pod to 50/50 or light high-VG liquids.

When the burnt taste is not a burnt coil

Two cases on Geekvape’s FAQ are a burnt taste with a healthy coil.

The first is spit-back. A tank that gets hot, it says, “can effectively cook the remnants of expelled e-juice inside the chimney giving you a burnt taste”. The fix is cleaning, not a coil: remove the top cap, clean cap and chimney with a lightly soaked isopropyl alcohol q-tip, wait a minute or so. If the coil is flooded from overpriming, flip the tank upside down to empty the chimney, then close the airflow and take dry pulls.

The second is old liquid. A burnt taste just after fitting a new coil, Geekvape says, sometimes disappears after a few puffs, but at other times you may need to replace the e-liquid. Riot agrees that the remaining liquid can hold the taste and says to empty the tank before refilling.

A vape that will not fire at all is a different fault; our guide to why a vape is flashing and not working reads the makers’ flash codes.

Questions readers ask

Is there a way I can fix my burnt disposable vape?

Not in any way the pages we read support. A disposable has no coil you can reach, and Riot E-Liquid’s guide says one that tastes burnt cannot be saved and should go to a vape or battery recycling point. No disposable maker’s own burnt-taste instruction was among the pages this desk read.

How will I know if my coil is burnt?

The makers name the symptoms. Geekvape’s N Cartridge FAQ lists a drop in flavour, a burnt taste or reduced vapour as signs the integrated coil has reached the end of its life, and its Z coil page says to replace a coil on burnt taste or flavour decline. Black or crumbly cotton is Riot’s sign of a severe burn.

What causes a burnt coil?

Vaporesso names four causes: the pod or coil at the end of its life, dry burning once the liquid runs out, thicker higher-VG e-liquid, and firing before priming and waiting. Geekvape’s N Cartridge FAQ adds high wattage and chain vaping. Its main FAQ points at sweetener too, advising a liquid with less of it.

This hardware is used with nicotine-containing e-liquid, and nicotine is an addictive chemical. It is for adults of legal purchase age only, an age that local law sets.
